Fifth Graders Taking Online Quiz Using iPads

January Library Happenings

Third graders have been learning about biographies in order to support their assigned biography project on Massachusetts citizens.  We played a fun interactive matching game to learn all about biography call numbers and how to find them in the library. We also read Caldecott Winner Snowflake Bentley to learn about the elements of the biography genre.
The fourth graders have read some humorous books about idioms and completed an idiom matching activity.  We have also used the iPads this month to explore science topics such as weather and the solar system.

The fifth and sixth graders read Bully, Patricia Polacco's new book, which addresses the subject of cyberbullying.  We also viewed a video clip about cyberbullying on Brainpop and completed an online quiz about the topic.  This unit complements the Netsmartz program that students have been focusing on in computer class.

Here is a great article on cyberbullying published by School Library Journal. It also includes a comprehensive list of resources.

Visit the Library PortaPortal!

I have put together a library portaportal for staff and students. It's a "one stop shop" and includes great sites about books and reading, research and library skills, as well as links to Howe-Manning subscription databases and databases sponsored by the Massachusetts Library System.  The portaportal can be accessed from my teacher web page or from the Howe-Manning library website.  Here is the link:
