This month, third graders were thoroughly engaged in a "Caldecott Exploration." We read aloud several Caldecott winners which included the wordless book Tuesday by David Wiesner. Students participated in some pair-reading activities and discussed why they thought the illustrations of certain books were deserving of this very prestigious award.
Fourth graders discussed what it meant to make inferences. We read Brave Irene by William Steig...but the students were not told the title of the book. Students were asked to make inferences about Irene's character based on her actions and then had to come up with their own title!
Fifth graders explored books about animals by renowned award-winning author and photographer Nic Bishop. We learned about the Sibert Award for nonfiction and read Marsupials as well as his most recent book about snakes. Students then visited his author website and completed a webquest activity about his life and how he researched several of his books.
Sixth graders were introduced to a periodical about world cultures called Faces. Each issue highlights a different country or region of the world and relates to the “five themes” of geography. We took a look at “a day in the life” of a Chinese student and learned about Chinese New Year. To connect to the sixth grade study of Russia, we perused more articles in Faces and were intrigued by the article on “The Amber Room.” We also read a variation of the popular Russian folktale “Baba Yaga.”

Flint Public Library Community Read Program
This week, the Howe-Manning Elementary School welcomed Melissa Gaspar, Director of the Flint Public Library, to talk to students about the Middleton Community Read Program. The Flint Public Library is sponsoring a town-wide community reading event to celebrate Middleton's agricultural heritage. The whole town can participate by reading books about food, farms, and dairy farming. Visit the Flint Public Library website for more information on the many scheduled events surrounding this community-building program.
Lisa Rundquist, Children's Librarian at the Flint Public Library, compiled a list of great fiction and nonfiction books about farming for students in Grades 3-6. Titles may be checked out at the school or public library.
The following Community Read Notices were sent home to all Howe-Manning students:

Fifth Graders Taking Online Quiz Using iPads
January Library Happenings
Third graders have been learning about biographies in order to support their assigned biography project on Massachusetts citizens. We played a fun interactive matching game to learn all about biography call numbers and how to find them in the library. We also read Caldecott Winner Snowflake Bentley to learn about the elements of the biography genre.
The fourth graders have read some humorous books about idioms and completed an idiom matching activity. We have also used the iPads this month to explore science topics such as weather and the solar system.
The fifth and sixth graders read Bully, Patricia Polacco's new book, which addresses the subject of cyberbullying. We also viewed a video clip about cyberbullying on Brainpop and completed an online quiz about the topic. This unit complements the Netsmartz program that students have been focusing on in computer class.
